Save The Date: Announcing the 2022 Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action, Jan. 31-Feb 4th!

The Black Lives Matter at School movement is preparing to launch its 6th annual national Week of Action, from January 31st through February 4th, 2022!

Last year in the wake of the 2020 uprising, BLM at School tripled in size, with many more communities all over the country registering on the NEA’s website to demonstrate their participation (if you plan to participate in the week of action this year–teaching a lesson or organizing an event–please register your action on the website, however big or small).  To learn more of this history and practice of BLM at School visit this page, or order the book, Black Lives Matter at School: An Uprising for Educational Justice

If you have never participated in the Week of Action before, please check out the Black Lives Matter at School Starter Kit that has a plethora of resources to support your week of centering Blackness, joy and justice. You can order your BLM at School shirts to wear during the week of action at their store.

Participating in BLM at Schools consists of at least two major components:

1) Teaching to the 13 guiding principles of the BLM Global Network for each day during the Week of Action.

2) Advocating for the 4 national demands of BLM at School.

For lessons to teach around the 13 guiding principles of the BLM Global Network for each day during the Week of Action, please see the BLM at School Curriculum Guide.

The four national demands of BLM at School are:

This has been one of the most challenging years for educators, students and families in the schools.  In addition to the COVID pandemic and the omicron surge, the right has launched an unhinged attack on teaching the truth about structural racism. These circumstances certainly present major challenges to building the Week of Action this year.  And yet we know that our Black youth and educators need support more than ever in the struggle for a racially just education system.  Whatever level of participation you can provide this year will be greatly appreciated!

You are missing the most important demand. Teach black children how to read , write, and do math. Police are not the problem. Failing public schools are the problem. Hiring more black teachers is not the solution. I worked in schools that had a minority of black teachers. It didn’t make a difference in reading or math proficiency.
