Help Us Tell the Story of Our Enslaved Ancestors–And Check Out the Trailer for Our Film!

In 2023, my family began a life-changing journey—traveling to the Lenoir Plantation in Mississippi and the Darensbourg Plantation in Louisiana to uncover and document the stories of our ancestors. What started as a family trip has become Where I Got My Name, a film about survival, truth, and the power of knowing where you come from. 🎥 Watch the trailer below to preview this work-in-progress film about our family’s path from enslavement to emancipation—and the legacy they left behind. Then read the letter my dad wrote updating people on the progress of our film and asking for donations to help us complete the project.

From the Plantation to the Present: Help Us Complete our Family Film, “Where I Got My Name”

As Black History Month comes to a close, I’m reaching out with an opportunity to not only reflect on history but to actively support its preservation. My family and I are working on a documentary film, Where I Got My Name: A Story of Struggle and Self-Discovery, chronicling our journey to Mississippi and Louisiana to uncover the history of our ancestors who were enslaved on the Lenoir and Darensbourg plantations. We can't finish our film, Where I got My Name, without your help and we would be deeply grateful if you could donate to support the completion of our film.

“Where I Got My Name: A Story of Struggle and Self Discovery”–Help Us Tell the Story of Our Enslaved Ancestors

I just got back from taking my sons on a life-changing journey to Mississippi and Louisiana where we went to the sites of the plantations on which our family members were enslaved. There we began making a documentary film about our experience—but we need your help to finish the project, so please consider donating to our GoFundMe page.
